EVALUATION

FINAL EVALUATION OF MY FILM

In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?

My media product challenges the forms and conventions or a real media product in various ways. I wanted to make my product ‘film’ to be different to your everyday film and stick out to the audience from other films. There were a variety of different techniques that I used in which to do this. Most typical films these days are in colour because we now have the technology to film footage on a video camera in colour. I wanted to change my film to be in black and white to standout, also changing my film to black and white added to the strange, mysterious and puzzling plot.

It was a struggle to make my film standout a lot because the plot was nothing amazing but in some ways this was good because it brought the audience away from a typical film plot and made them concentrate more on what is happening with the character and what they could be feeling. In some ways I wanted my audience to watch the start of my film and be baffled and wonder what is going on, making my audience feel this way would make them want to carry on watching the film to find out what is actually happening.

When filming the footage I decided to stick to the forms and conventions of a film. I filmed my footage from various angles and levels, making various different clips to find which would be the best shot for each part in my film, the shots I used ranged from a close-up shot to a POV shot. I also made sure I did not break the 180-degree rule; I made sure I filmed everything from one side. I also included shot/reverse shot in my film for conversation, to make my film different I used shot/reverse shot even though there was only one character on screen but two people speaking, and switched to different shots for each time each person spoke.

The music in my film is like most other typical films with intro music over the credits/titles to make it more interesting. The music I used was played on a piano and was put over the credits at the start to open the film and then re-used at the end of the film after the girl hangs herself but the pitch of the piano/tune is a lot lower, this helps set the mood because it is a familiar tune to the audience because it was used at the start and having it in a lower pitch sets a more upsetting atmosphere, which goes with the hanging of the girl.

With the music/soundtrack in the film I wanted to make the audience sort of get a little bit freaked out by the girl crying at the start and the annoying metronome sound/beat in the background of the clips at the start. This also made my film different to most other films because it was trying to mess with the audience’s minds whilst still trying to make them watch on and be entertained.

My film used the forms and conventions of a real film with the credits having them at the beginning and the opening titles; this made the audience know who made and directed the film and who was going to be staring in it. It also stuck to the forms and conventions when having the title come in after around two minutes of footage, showing the audience the name of the film they are about to watch.

How does your media product represent particular social groups?

My media product represents no particular social group in general but would most likely represent teenagers or is trying to at least leave teenagers with a message after watching the film. The film shows a sixteen-year-old girl who has OCD, she is shown as any other girl her age wearing the same sort of clothes and living the same sort of life but the only difference is her mental disorder of OCD obsessive-compulsive disorder.

I wanted people to feel sorry for the character and think about how life must be with a mental problem like hers. Through the film she looks and acts very similar to most teenagers and the only things she does differently is because of her disorder. I wanted her to represent an everyday teenager and the audience not to look properly into the disorder and just see her the same as everyone else.

It does not represent either higher or lower class people in any way, it is just meant to be an average sixteen-year-old middle class girl. The film can really be for anyone to watch but is aimed more toward people sixteen or older, so someone like the character because they would hopefully be able to understand the hidden meanings of the film more than the younger generation and on top of that the person in the film relates to them in some ways because the people watching it are from the same age as her.

• What kind of media institution might distribute your media product and why?

Most film institutions in the UK could distribute my media product or America or any English speaking places in the world. The film would not be distributed to places, which didn’t speak English because my film is in English and it doesn’t have subtitles. The film could when fully made be put in cinemas around the world and shown to people 16+ in age this would make people know of the film and it would spread by word about the film.

If the film is a hit at the cinemas it would be easier to sell the film to TV channels to be broadcasted on television. The channel’s it would most likely be shown on would be things like Discovery Channel and Sky Movies and BBC programmes. It would suit the Discovery Channel or any documentary channels because it is about a serious mental disorder, which affects many people. Other channels like BBC and Sky movies would show it because they know it was good in the cinemas and know they could get more people watching there channels is they show it because people most likely would like it and would make them money.

After showing it at the cinemas it could also be put onto DVD and sold in shops, it would be sold in most electronic shops like HMV and Virgin.

I think that any media institution which wants to educate and entertain there audience would want to distribute my media product because it is different to every other typical film. I also think that media institutions that like things that are different would buy and distribute my product. A media institution/film company, which would be interested in my product and might distribute it, could be Warner Bros Pictures or Universal Studios because they are big worldwide major media companies who would be able to distribute the film all over the world. It could even be distributed by smaller independent film companies like Village Roadshow Pictures which has be known to do more serious films like ‘Training Day’, which would suit my film because my film is on a serious topic.

• Who would be the audience for your media product?

My film rating will be 15 because of violence and disturbing images. It will be for both sexes and for people in any class, so you don’t have to be posh to watch. It would be for people who spoke or understand English, so would be distributed in the UK and in USA and others places which spoke an English type language. My film would have to be advertised on TV, on the Radio and in magazines like FHM or Heat or in newspapers like The Sun and other magazines and newspapers like it. I would get my distributor/ a major film company like Universal Studios to distribute and advertise my product to bring the audience in to coming to watch it.

• How did you attract/address your audience?

I attracted and addressed my audience using a range of different techniques. Firstly I brought the attention of my audience in with my opening credits and titles, I used a black and white colour flow effects on the words and I also used an interesting font because it looks good and made the audience want to watch the rest of the film because if the credits look good then the film will probably look good/ be good too.

The music at the start of the film was used because the film/credits/titles looked good but it just needed the music to make it sound good as well. The tune of the music was appealing; this also helped attract my audience. The music from the start is used again later in the film at the end this was recognised by the audience and it helped address them.

Throughout the film the plot has been done to make the audience wonder what is happening, up until the end nobody knows what is happening, so people want to keep watching because they are in question of what is happening and want to know. The end is were it really grabs the attention of the audience because up until the girl hanging herself nothing is happening, and when she does hang herself its so sudden and unpredictable.

• What have you learnt about technologies from the process of constructing this product?

From the process of constructing my film I learnt various things to do with the technologies needed when making and editing a film. When filming I learnt how to use a video camera properly, getting everything right with focus and zoom etc so the footage I capture is prefect and easy to edit. I also learnt how to find the best shot and what looks good and what doesn’t, I made sure every shot looked prefect weather it be a long shot or a POV shot.

When editing the film I learnt that editing is a process of skilful selection and that I needed to make sure I chose the best looking shot/angle for each clip. On a Apple Mac I edited the footage I captured using the programme iMovie, I had to learn how to cut out un-needed parts of footage, add music, add transitions, add titles and credits and whilst doing this I had to make sure it looked good. I also learnt how to use the program GarageBand on the Apple Mac because I needed to find music I needed and record sounds and voice over I needed for the film too.

• Looking back at your preliminary task, what do you feel you have learnt in the progression from it to the full product?

From looking back at my preliminary task, I have realised I learnt a lot about the selection of camera shots and camera angles and how different shots and angles can bring a whole different perspective to the final film outcome. Each shot has to be prefect to get what you want out of your film. I have also learnt how to use both iMovie and GarageBand to its full with making and editing films and making and recording music. On the whole I have learnt how to make a film.

•What would you do if you did it again?

If I were to do my film again I would do everything the same except for I would try a totally different genre and make my film a lot more upbeat and fun. I would most likely do a comedy film; it would also be nice to try something new.

MAKING THE SOUND...

Firstly i recorded the crying and the phone conversation using the recording microphone built into the Apple Mac on GarageBand.

It was then ready to put in myfilm. Secondly I found sounds like the clock ticking which I needed to put in the film over the clock using GarageBand.

I then found the piano tune for the non-diegetic music for the opening and the ending of the film. The music I had chosen was a sad sounding tune which wasn't very upbeat this suited my film because my film is meant to be upsetting.

Later in my film after the main point in the film has happened (the girl hangs h
erself) the music comes back on but in a lower tone/pitch and it makes it even more upsetting.
Using the same music twice to set two different moods is good be
cause at the start it welcomes the audience and the don't think anything of the music until they have seen the whole film.
This technique of the music pitch slightly changing, which changes the mood or to create a different level tension in the film has been done many times before, for example in most 'James Bond' films the theme music is used a lot of times through out the film at different points changing the tone or beat or pitch slightly to fit what is happening on screen.

When there is a silence in the film/ when the sounds are only the natural sounds, it makes the audience become more engaged with actual video footage and what is happening on the screen. It also makes it more confusing and it is different because the silence draws them in more. Also having music throughout the film doesnt look right and seems tackyand takes away from the video footage of the film.
After all this had been done all the music and sounds were added into the film.

THE MAKING OF THE FILM...

THE FILM:

The first thing I did after filming was look through my footage on the camera to make sure I had captured everything that I needed. The second thing I did was the importing all the clips of footage on to the iMovie program so I could then edit it. Once all the clips had been up loaded on to iMovie they were ready to put onto the timeline in the order I wanted them to be so I could cut out the unwanted parts.

I then dragged in order the clips of footage I had taken down to the timeline bar.

After I had all my clips in order I began to edit and cut out the bits of footage that were not needed in the film. I made sure I kept the best shot and angle for each part. I was able to cut the clip using the split video clip at playhead tool. I could use this tool to cut footage and make footage shorter.

After I had the footage all perfect I had to added Transitions and effects to make the film look the way I wanted and to flow the way I wanted it to.

After choosing a Transition by watching the previews you had to drag the Transition you wanted onto the timeline and put it between the clips you wanted the Transition to be on.

After you dragged the transition into the timeline it automatically was put into the film for you after it finished loading into it.

The next thing which I did was add Titles and Credits, you did this the same way as you did with adding the transition, after choosing what you want to write and the way you want it to look etc you dragged it to the place you wanted it in the film on the timeline.

It then loads into the film like with the Transitions.

After I had all the titles and the credits I needed I added some final effects and sounds before I had finished making the film.

I changed my film to Black and White because it gave the film a more of an upsetting and depressing feel to it, this linked with the plot of the film and the feel to the film. The Black and White could also makes it all seem more mysterious because it gives it a dark feeling to it and adds to the drama. Also people don’t tend to see Black and White films in the cinema or anywhere these days because we have colour television and we are able to film in colour. I wanted my film to be in Black and White because it would make it stick out and give a strange feel to the film.

The final thing I did was add the music from GarageBand, which I had found and saved for my film. The way you added the music/ sound was the same way you added Transitions and Video FX. Firstly you find the sound or sounds you want and the secondly you drag them into the timeline to place where it is needed.

After the music and sound effects were added the film was finished.

HOW WILL I FUND THE FILM?

The film is only an opening and is around two minutes long and the camera and camera equipment was provided by the college, so basically the film is funded by Victoria College Jersey, the college which I go to, but if I had a company name for my film/ production name it would be MJM studios which would be a joke on the famous studio MGM studios and MJM are the initials for my name Michael John McCallum.

THE WRITER,DIRECTOR AND EDITOR

The person who wrote, directed and edited the film was me, Michael John McCallum:

Obsessive-compulsive disorder OCD

Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) is a mental disorder characterized by intrusive thoughts resulting in compulsive behaviors and mental acts that the person feels driven to perform, according to rules that must be applied rigidly, aimed at reducing anxiety by preventing some imagined dreaded event; however, these compulsive behaviors and mental acts are not connected to the imagined dreaded event.

OCD is the fourth most common mental disorder and is nearly as common as asthma and diabetes mellitus. In the United States, one in 50 adults has OCD.In severe cases; it affects a person's ability to function in everyday activities. The disorder often has a serious impact on the sufferer's (and their family's) quality of life. Also, the psychological self-awareness of the irrationality of the disorder can be painful. For people with severe OCD, it may take several hours a day to carry out the compulsive acts.

The phrase "obsessive-compulsive" has become part of the English lexicon, and is often used in an informal or caricatured manner to describe someone who is meticulous, perfectionistic, absorbed in a cause, or otherwise fixated on something or someone. Although these signs are often present in OCD, a person who exhibits them does not necessarily have OCD, and may instead have obsessive-compulsive personality disorder (OCPD) or some other condition.

Filiming the FOOTAGE

Using a camera provided by school, I filmed at home after school the footage needed, so I could edit it when finished using imovie, which is a program on the Apple Mac’s at school. Once I got home my actress arrived at my house and we were ready to film.

I showed my cousin the storyboard I had made to give her the plot and the idea of what to do. I also explained to her that the character she is playing has OCD and is a mysterious character. I also told her that I wanted her to act it so it looked normal but underneath it all you can see something is wrong, I told her to try and make it strange to watch. When filming everything went pretty much perfectly and was not a hassle. I had to get use to using the camera before I filmed it but it was very simple and easy to use and understand. I tried to make sure I used various camera angles to what was happening ad to make it more interesting.

After filming all the footage I uploaded the footage on to the Apple Mac on to imovie was then ready for editing.

Filming location

THE FILM LOCATION WAS MY HOUSE :

FILMING ACTRESS

My cousin Alice Bravery was the actress playing the girl with OCD:

Storyboarding

Firstly I made/drew out a storyboard and then filmed through the storyboard explaining what will happen in the film and from which camera angles etc.

MISE EN SCENE

In my film the Mise en scene is primarily used to make the film look naturalistic and realistic, it also sets the mood for the film.

Costume: The costume is just everyday women’s clothes; the girl is wearing a pair of jeans and a light green jumper/hoodie. She is done to look like she normally looks in a normal day. Her clothing is dull which makes her look mysterious, this suits her character.

Lighting: The general lighting is done to look naturalistic and only uses the natural lighting or lighting fixtures already in the rooms.

Actors/Actresses: The actress will be an average looking normal everyday girl, who is made to just look like one of us. The actress will be played by my cousin because she does GCSE drama and has been in many Teenage Jersey Acting Productions, she has also been in many eisteddfods and has won golds and silvers. So she is known for her good acting ability.I will also speak with her in the voice over phone call, being my normal self. I am also a reasonably good actor and do A level drama and did GCSE.

Make up: No make-up will be done, unless she is already wearing make-up, it is all been done to look naturalistic.

Props: A knife to cut food, a sink to wash her hands, a clock, and various ropes and things to hang herself with.

Setting: A house/ My house.

RECORDING THE SOUND FOR MUSICAL SCORE ETC (GARAGEBAND)

GARAGEBAND:

Sing, play, and loop:
GarageBand turns your Mac into a full-featured recording studio. Build a beat with the included loops, then plug in a guitar, bass, or microphone. You can even play (or sing) into the mic on your Mac. GarageBand captures the audio and turns it into digital files you can manipulate using a host of recording and mixing tools. It also includes the expertise of a built-in recording engineer, so you always sound your best.

Record your best take:
Record a part as many times as you like. GarageBand keeps track of every take and saves it to a multi-take region. Play your song back while switching between different takes to choose the one that sounds best. Keep the takes you love, delete the ones you don’t. And when you’re ready for backup, invite your friends over for some multitrack recording. Record more than 100 tracks and up to eight real instruments simultaneously: GarageBand supports any Mac OS X-compatible audio I/O device.

Make some arrangements:
As you record, GarageBand helps you add structure to your song. Most songs are arranged in distinct sections: introduction, verse, and chorus. With the sections clearly defined, you can rearrange your song at any time. Want to repeat a verse? Copy and paste. Move the chorus? Click and drag. All the tracks that belong to a section go along with it.

Master your mix:
Once you’ve laid down a few tracks, it’s time to mix. Just like a professional recording engineer, GarageBand helps you create a sound all your own. Bring out the best in your performance by enhancing timing and tuning. Add some basic effects such as compression, reverb, or EQ. Make your song sound truly unique by adding fun effects such as Track Echo, Chorus, and Automatic Filter. Then tweak your mix by adjusting the volume of each track or panning between speakers.

THEME OF THE MAIN FILM

The main theme for my film is action based drama, the opening is to make the audience want to watch on and find out what the hell they just saw because they will not have a clue why or what has just happened. They see a girl doing various things for a long time and would most likely presume she has OCD. She then kills herself, or that’s what it seems like has happened.

To help get a grip on the drama what is happening in the opening scene a good use of camera shots, sound and editing will be used making it hopefully add to the confusion of what is happening and why is it happening.

As the drama unfolds and it gets more confusing for the audience a voice over phone conversation comes on. The conversation is simply but still leaves the audience wondering what is happening and why is she not sure about going to the party and makes them want to find out who is this character.

The mood of the film set by the confusing plot and the confusing things which are happening because it doesn’t make sense to the audience making the want to watch on. I wanted the audiences’ mood to be confused and worried. The use of mise-en-scene will help this with the setting of the character’s home, and the film being in black and white.

I wanted the film to be almost like sin city in the way it is black and white and only highlights various features or things in the film in colour. For example I wanted the word ‘help’ on one of the CD’s to be in red so it had emphasis on it and adds to the confusion and randomness of the film making the audience want to watch on.

MUSICAL SCORE

The musical score will change the mood and feel of the film and what is happening in the film. It is a subconscious change in mood for the audience.

For my film, I do not know weather or not to have a musical score because it could take away from the action on the screen. Also I want my film to naturalistic in all aspects and do not want music to affect it.The music in a film usually has been done to stick with the theme, if the music is too different to the theme it will look and sound strange.

The only sound in my film will be pre-recorded phone conversation between the character on screen and an off screen character. It will be done so that it is a voice over to what is happening on screen. Also pre-recorded sound will be used at the opening of the film with the sound of the main girl crying, this will be like a voice over as well. The recordings will be done using gargeband and will be added to the film when finished.

Any other sound will just be added to make it look more realistic or to make something standout, for example I used the sound effects of a ticking clock over the clip of the clock ticking away. The sound effects will be done using gargeband and then imported into the film.

Storyboard Explanation

Q AIR/GRAPHS-research

I asked 20 people (10 women/girls and 10 men/boys) of mixed ages ranging from 10 to 75 a few different questions to help me when deciding on what type of film would suit what I wanted to do best and what people look for in a film.

What is your favorite genre of film out of the following?
Drama Action Thriller Horror Romance

Do you like films which entertain you and make you think or films which just entertain you?
Entertain/Think Just Entertain

Do you prefer a film with or without a hidden message/moral?
With a message Without a message

Question One Results:
15% (3 people) of people answered that there favorite type of film genre was Horror,10% (2 people) answered Romance, 40% (8 people) answered Action, 10% (2 people) answered Thriller, and 25% (5 people) answered Drama.

Question Two Results:
75% (15 people) answered that they like film
s entertain and make you think and 25% (5 people) answered that they like films purely that entertain you.

Question Three Results:
80% (16 people) answered that they prefer a film with a message/moral, 20% (4 people) answered that they prefer films without a message/moral.

Below is one of the questionnaires that I made and an example of what one of the answered questionnaires looked like:

The information which I collected from my results helped me decided what type of film genre I wanted my film to be and helped decide if my film actually needed a hidden message/moral or not.

TARGET AUDIENCE-research

1. Gender-male/female
My film will be made for both males and females to watch. It will not be aimed directly at either sex. It will have a bit of romance for the women and a bit of action for the men. Using the internet I found out about the preferences of film genre for both women and men on average. The table below shows the following, males and females display distinctly different patterns of film genre preferences. The largest differences occur with the ACTION-ADVENTURE, ROMANCE and SCIENCE FICTION genres.

The genre which I will most likely choose for my film will be an action, drama so it will be a mix. The film will be for both sexes and will have a mix of what women want and what men want. I asked ten women then ten men people what they like about film. Firstly I asked the women what they look for in a film. The first person said that they look for a message in the film, otherwise it is pointless watching the film. The second person I asked said that they want the film to make them laugh or to interest them and them feel involved. Another person I asked said that as long as the film has some moral to it they will watch it. One of the last people I asked said a film is nothing without a bit of drama. I then began asking men the same question. The first person I spoke to said that he like any film with action. The second person said that he likes film which makes him think but still entertain him. Another person said they liked films with a lot of drama in because they are more entertaining. One of the last people I asked said that he liked Sci-fi films or films with a lot of action in them. From speaking to people and from the table above I have decided to make an action, drama genre film.

2. Age-the age group e.g. elderly, teenagers etc

My film will be a fourteen plus film because it may include a mild use of violence and a may include mild use of strong language. I looked on the internet about how films are rated and why they are rated in that way to find out the age group my film would belong to and be aimed at. The ratings/ages groups and reasons for the groups are below:

General
Suitable for viewing by persons of all ages. Occasional violence, swearing and coarse language, and the most innocent of sexually suggestive scenes and nudity are permitted in this category.
PG/12a
Parental guidance advised. Theme or content may not be suitable for all children although there is no age restriction. Motion pictures in this category may contain less subtle sexually suggestive scenes and nudity and a more realistic portrayal of violence than in the General category; coarse language may occur more often than in the General category.
15
Suitable for persons 15 years of age or older. Persons under 15 years of age must view these motion pictures accompanied by an adult. Motion pictures in this category may contain violence, coarse language or sexually suggestive scenes.
18a
Persons under 18 years of age must view these motion pictures accompanied by an adult. Motion pictures in this category will contain horror, explicit violence, frequent coarse language or scenes that are more sexually suggestive than in the 14A category.
Restricted
Restricted to persons 18 years of age and over. Persons under 18 years of age are not permitted to attend under any circumstances. These motion pictures are "adult motion pictures", as defined in the Act, and may contain explicit sexual scenes, violence or scenes. The director will assign this classification to motion pictures if the director considers that the theme, subject matter or plot of the adult motion picture is artistic, historical, political, educational or scientific.
Adult
Restricted to persons 18 years of age and over. Persons under 18 years of age are not permitted to attend under any circumstances. These motion pictures are "adult motion pictures", as defined in the Act, and may contain explicit sexual scenes or scenes of brutality or torture to persons or animals, that are portrayed in a realistic and explicit manner; however, the scenes would, in the director's opinion, be tolerable to the community.

My film age grouping/ rating will be 15 because of violence and use of coarse language.

3. Interests-sci-fi, westerns, thriller, action etc

My film will be for people who are interested in real life drama and what they are not aware of what happens around them. I want my audience to be thinking about what they are seeing because it could actually be happening in real life some where in the world as it is serious. A lot of people are interested in action and drama in film, so if I am able to make a film which is about real life situations and include action and drama in it the audience will not only be entertained they will learn something as well. Below is a chart which I found on the internet with the average preferred genre type of a film.

I want my film to be about a girl with OCD because it is a serious mental illness which people are not very aware of and they can learn more about it. I would like my audience to sympathise the character and realise that it is not only the girl in my film who has OCD but many people around the world really do have the mental illness and they would really appreciate the life that they have been given. What is OCD? Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) is a mental disorder most commonly characterized by intrusive, repetitive thoughts resulting in compulsive behaviors and mental acts that the person feels driven to perform, according to rules that must be applied rigidly, aimed at preventing some imagined dreaded event; however, these behaviors or mental acts are not connected to the imagined dreaded event.

4. Class-ABC1, C2DE, lower, higher etc
I want my film to be for both higher class ABC1 people and lower class C2DE people because both classes like to enjoy films and they could both learn something new from my film.

THINGS TO THINK ABOUT FOR MY FILM

When designing the Film I had to think about:

  • What do people want from the film?
  • What camera angles should be used?
  • What genre is most interesting?
  • Which effects should be used in the film?
  • How will it be edited?
  • What type of font shall be used for film titles?
  • What is the target audience?
  • Is there violence in the film?
  • Is there strong language in the film?
  • Is the film suitable for all ages?
  • What is the film about?
  • Is there a specific topic in the film?
  • Where will the film be set/where will it be filmed?
  • etc..

RESEARCH-OUTCOME

Five things I have learnt from researching films:

  1. How credits look/ should look and how they can set the mood of a film.

  1. Different colours can represent different things and they can also change the mood of a film, this is also the same with lighting in a film, for example if there is not much lighting and it is dark it could make the film feel scary or mysterious etc.

  1. If a character in a film does something different to the other characters or has something wrong with them they tend to stick out, different characters are often given different backgrounds before filming begins.

  1. The plot of the film changes everything and could affect the whole out come of the film and the mood/audience for the final film.

  1. Different camera angles/ shots/ techniques look better than others for different pieces of footage, for example a low angled camera shot looking up at a character could make them look more powerful as they look big and appear to the audience to be standing over them. This would also change the mood of the clip/the final film.

THE PURSUIT OF HAPPYNESS- research

The Pursuit of Happyness-CAMERA SHOTS
  • What were the camera shot used for?

At the start of the scene Chris (Will Smith) is sitting at his desk working away, he looks like he is under a lot of stress. This is shown using a medium point of view shot of some one looking at Chris working. Then a man comes over and tells Chris to come with him. Then the camera pans across the room as Chris walked towards the interview room, this shows the audience where the scene is set. It then switches back to a point of view shot from one of the interviewers as Chris walks through the door the, this shows the audience what it would be like to be the interviewer and the first impressions they would get from the way Chris looks.

Match on action is then used when Chris goes to shake the boss’s hand. Then the boss tells Chris that Chris has a nice shirt and a little bit of conversation is started and shot reverse/shot is used when they speak to each other to show both characters point of view.

When Chris shakes the interviewer’s hands and the boss’s hand it is shown in a medium shot to show all the important characters in the scene. This introduces them to the audience watching the film.

When they all sit down it goes to a long shot from outside the interview room looking in to show what else is happening at this point in time outside the interview room. When they are sitting down it uses an over the shoulder shot when the boss speaks to Chris and does the same when Chris speaks to the boss, this is like shot reverse/shot and an over the shoulder shot put together.

The boss then tells Chris that he has the job and Chris starts to cry with happiness and it uses a close up shot on his face to show his emotions and show the audience that he is crying because he is so happy.

Then they all get up and it goes back to the long shot from outside the interview room in the office working area where Chris was before. Chris then leaves towards the door, just before he leaves the boss stops him and gives him back the money he borrowed from him early. It then does a close up shot on the money. It then goes back to a normal medium shot showing Chris walking out the door.

Chris then leaves and he walks across the office and its is panned along at his head on a close up, it is like a tracking shot. This is done to show that Chris is so happy he is in tears and it shows Chris’s emotions as he walks out the door.

The lighting in this scene has been done to look as natural as possible and look like a normal office area. The only extra thing they have done with the light is put more light on Chris because it is as if he is the chosen one.

In this scene the props used have been used to look like what would happen if it were in real life. The costume used in this scene is done to look realistic and as if they were everyday people at work. They wear typical work clothes, for example Chris is wearing his suit.

Looking at this scene will help me when I make my film because I will be able to look into what different shots and angles can be used for my film. For example over the shoulder shots during shot reverse/shot if I use any conversation in my film.

Hitch-CAMERA SHOTS
  • What camera shots are used?

At the start of the scene Kevin James walks up to a door and opens it, it uses match on action for when he turns the handle to get in on the outside to a long shot of him actually walking through the door to the inside. When he gets through the door it does a medium close up shot on his face to show that he looks sleepy but he is now there to work.

It then zooms out to show the whole room from a long shot and it establishs everyone in the room and what the room is like. From the audiences point of view they can see all the other people who work with Kevin James gathered round a table in a meeting and the audience meet the actress Amber Valletta who the actor Kevin James eventually falls in love with.

It then pans across the room till Kevin James is sitting down in his chair. It then goes back to a long shot to show that everyone is now here and they are all sitting round the big table with their client Amber Valletta. They all start to speak to each other taking it in turns to suggest something. When the conversation is filmed it used over the shoulder shots and shot reverse/shot.

The scene ends with all the workers trying to give Amber Valletta their pens beacuse she needs one to sign something, this is show from a medium shot getting the top half of their bodies in the shot. The shot concentrates on peoples facial expressions because they all really want her to take their pens beacuse they think she is beautiful. In the end Amber Valletta takes Kevin James pen.

In this scene the man props are the people pens other than that there are no significant props. The costume of the actors and actresses has been done so it looks natural and the men are just wearing typical office workers suits and their client is wearing casual/posh clothes which look designer, this shows she's wealthy.

The lighting has been done to look natural and it would not use any other extra lights other than the ones in the office. The only thing which has been done with the lighting is that the women is the most important and has a little bit more light on her.

This will also help me when I look at different camera shots/movements/angles/positions for my film.
